What's In A Name?
Clinton appears to have been named for one of the most popular figures
of the early nineteenth century -- the famous New York governor, DeWitt
Clinton. Governor Clinton was one of the prime proponents of the building
of the Erie canal. His popularity was so great in the Midwest, that nearly
every state in the region has a Clinton County named after him. Illinois,
in fact, named two counties after him -- Clinton County and DeWitt County
(with the county seat at the city of Clinton). A quick internet search of
the name DeWitt Clinton suggests that nineteenth century Americans were
almost as likely to name their children after this governor as to name
their children after George Washington. |
