NATIVE OF COSHOCTON DEAD; LED DEMOCRATS John W. Cassingham, Coshocton's oldest native, died Friday at his home there at the age of 89. A prominent figure in state and national politics for many years, the aged man was well known in Zanesville and Muskingum county. He was born in Coshocton on June 22, 1840, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Cassingham. His father, a native of Kent county, England went to Coshocton early in life, living there for many years. Mr. Cassingham was a leader of the Democratic party organization in Coshocton, and eastern Ohio during the latter part of the nineteenth century; and was a delegate to the historic Democratic National Convention at Chicago in 1896. He served as deputy treasurer of Coshocton county from 1858 to 1867, subsequently served as president of the board of education and was president of the Coshocton Board of Trade. He was auditor of Coshocton County from 1880 to 1887 and was a member of the fifty-seventh and fifty-eighth congresses representing the seventeenth Ohio district composed of Licking, Holmes, Wayne, Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties. In 1873 he became one of the organizers of the Commercial National bank of Coshocton, which he served as president for many years and was long one of the most prominent factors in the business prosperity of the county. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. His wife, who prior to her marriage was Miss Caroline Lamberson, was also a native of Coshocton county. She died on March 31, 1913. |
