Robert A. Peterson, 71, died Tuesday, May 30, 1995 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. Born Sept. 10, 1923 in Morris, he was a son of Archie and Ellen (Pierce) Peterson. Educated in Morris schools and a graduate of Morris High School with the class of 1941, he attended Monmouth College. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps as a pilot during WW II. On Nov. 19, he married Lovina M. Sutton in Deland, Fla. He was employed with the Illinois department of Corrections at Stateville Prison and Sheridan Correctional Facility. Also he was a deputy sheriff in Grundy County for Sheriff Richard Pierce. He was also employed with the city of Morris as a dispatcher for the Morris Police Department, retiring in 1988. An avid fisherman and hunter, he was an accomplished musician playing the saxophone, clarinet and harp with the big bands from the age of 13. For 20 years he was president of Musicians Local #323. Surviving are his wife of Morris; five daughters, Ellen (Arthur) Myre, Marseilles, Priscilla Johnson of Champaign, Deborah Marnell of San Diego, Eileen Blackwell of Fayetville, NY, Merilee Mowery of Mokena; one son Roger (Rose) of Albermorle, NC; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Jane Cheshareck. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the U.C. Davis and Sons Funeral Home Ltd. with the Rev. David Nygard will officiate. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Fielder Myers Musical Scholarship Fund at Morris Community High School, the Morris Fire Department or to a charity of the donor's choice.
