C. D. Gibbs, Engineer, Dies At 76

Retired consulting engineer Clarence D. Gibbs, 76, of Hillcrest, Huntingdon R.D. 3 died at his home early Sunday morning, December 24, 1967. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

Gibbs moved with his family to Huntingdon in 1895 and the family established their present home on Piney Ridge in Smithfield Township in 1903.

He was a graduate of Huntingdon public schools in 1908, attending Juniata College, and received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1914.

He started his employment with W. B. Simpson working on the original Raystown Dam project, and returned to serve the Raystown Water Power Company at various times throughout his career. Gibbs represented the last member of the original crew of this project at the time of his death.

[He was later employed] with Genera1 Electric at Schenectady, N. Y. and various other firms, returning at intervals to Penn State University for advanced studies.

In March, 1945, Gibbs, along with two other engineers formed a partnership to conduct a consulting engineering business under the name of Louis T. Klauder and Associates which established its offices in the Philadelphia National Bank Building at Broad and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia.

Among the clients of this firm were the Delaware River Port Authority, the Radio Corporation of America, the South Carolina Public Authority and the City of Philadelphia. The firm also engaged in international contracts.

Gibbs retired as a partner from this firm in 1956, returning to his home in Huntingdon to reside.

The deceased was a veteran of World War I having served as a lieutenant aboard the SS South Dakota. He was very active in the organization of Veterans of World War I and had held offices on both state and national levels.

He was a charter member and past commander of Juniata Valley Barracks No 1433, Veterans of World War I at Huntingdon. He belonged to the Frank P. Hommon Post No 24, American Legion and to the Standing Stone Post No. 1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Born February 13, 1891, at Minneapolis, Minn., he was a son of E. E. C. and Anna (Cessingham [sic]) Gibbs. He was united in marriage to Helen Good, who survives along with three children: Mrs. W. A. (Shirley) Lewis, Mount Pleasant, Ill.; Mrs. Anne Humphreys, Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Raymond (Mary Phyllis) Sidorsky, East Lyme, Conn. There are five grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Walter H. Gibbs.

He was of the Protestant faith.

The deceased was a member of the American Institute of ElectricaI Engineers, the Mechanical Engineering Society, the American Naval Engineering Society, the Franklin Institute and the American Numismatic Association.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 30, at 2 p.m. from Brown's funeral home, Huntingdon. Interment will be made in Riverview Cemetery.

It was the request of the deceased that there be no viewing and no visitation. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Gibbs' memory may contribute to the Huntingdon County Tuberculosis and Health Society for emphysema research.
