Notes

Judith Eisenhauer, a descendant of David Lanfear, quotes from her grandfather's reminiscences of David:
"Grandfather Lanfear was a man of a very kindly nature. He never accumulated much property, and was of a timid disposition. I can remember a great deal about him, just how he looked. He was a man of small stature, thin, his face lined with care and old age and hard work. He was of a religious nature, was a man of the strictest integrity, and of good habits.... Grandfather had a great desire to come to California and visit his daughter Mary Cummings whom he had not seen for many years, but he was very poor and found it difficult to get the money needed to pay the high railroad fare between Illinois and California. But mother [Sarah LANFEAR Allen], Aunt Maria [LANFEAR Baldwin] and Uncle Carlos [LANFEAR] in some way made sacrifices and got the money together, and it must have been about the year 1870 that he traveled from Illinois by the Chicago & North Western, Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads for California. The Pacific railroads had only been completed a year or so before, and the fare was then about $180. Grandfather then was about 73 years of age, old, feeble and somewhat timid. His destination was Galt, but the railroad officials in some way carried him by that station, and it excited him so much, that he took a severe cold. He was taken back to Galt, and to Aunt Mary's farm home, where he died after four days with her. That was a tragedy to me, and my dear mother grieved a great deal about it. His grave is in a cemetery near Galt, Calif."
